What is Montessori?
Imagine an Education System Backed by a Nobel Laureate
Imagine an education system the founder of the teaching method was a 3-time Nobel Prize winner. Dr Maria Montessori (1870 – 1952) created her education system through scientific research on childhood development. Her theories and practices highlighted the close relationship between the senses, movement, and cognition, and that the best learning happens in an active learning environment.
The Montessori classroom, with its well-organised and carefully prepared environment, encourages hands-on learning while fostering academic learning, independence, and life skills.
Montessori education to nurture a child's whole personality, including their social, emotional, and physical growth
The Montessori classroom is an enticing environment where children learn through their senses, they have freedom to move and choose.
The materials are designed to encourage independence, self-correction, and develop critical thinking skills while also enhancing concentration and fine and gross motor skills.
The Montessori curriculum focuses on work through play and consists of five learning areas:
-
Math
The hands-on materials give children a fun and explorative introduction to numbers and numeracy through tactile interaction with counting and matching activities. With expertly designed materials, children are able to visualize and internalize mathematical concepts.
-
Language
Children learn language through phonics: sound and letter identification—by playing games and learning the sound, shape, and feel of letters through touch. Once mastered, they progress to word-building activities and begin reading and writing skills.
Our in-depth weekly circle time theme discussions and daily story-time develop vocabulary, comprehension, and general knowledge.
-
Practical Life
This area offers fun learning opportunities to develop hand strength and fine motor skills through pouring, pegging, tweezing, and squeezing. It also develops a sense of order, independence, responsibility, and concentration.
Beyond shelf-work, great emphasis is placed on grace, courtesy, and good manners.
-
Sensorial Learning
These materials further encourage both fine and gross motor skills while developing the child’s critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
Their involvement in this area requires them to sort, arrange, categorize, analyse, and assess. The child thus learns to self-correct errors as their critical thinking skills develop and evolve.
-
Culture
Through these exciting hands-on materials, children learn about the world and the diversity of countries, people, cultures, and animals; everything from geography, zoology, biology, history, science, art and music. These engagements help the children develop an appreciation and deeper understanding of their world, while preparing them as advocates for a better, cleaner world.

The best Montessori school in Durban ,the small classes and hands on approach is applauding ,kids get that individual attention and thrive on the care and love that’s given to them , you can never go wrong wit nadja ,she puts her heart into everything ,both my kids love her and her calm positive attitude towards everything … I believe the foundation of a child’s life is so important, it sets the bar for greater things ,and this school has ticked all the boxes . Also not forgetting the swimming lessons are a bonus point …so so happy with this school
